From an interview with a student who speaks about the reasons why he didn't participate actively in class:
"Nasıl söyleyeyim hocam, çalışmıyordum, dersler zorlaşıyordu zaten dersleri takip etmemeye başladım zaten. **Kendimi salıverdim artık.*** Sınavlara girmemeye başladım. Bundan dolayı işte hani artık güvenim kalmadı."

Gulsen Farrington
: I am afraid that this phrase does not give the meaning of "Kendini Salıvermek'' in this context. ''Letting yourself go'' means that the person does not care about how they look or their health. So it does not fit here, sorry.

I abandoned myself to despair.
abandon yourself to something (literary) : to feel an emotion so strongly that you can feel nothing else
Note from asker:
Nice suggestion, but it's too free I think. Thanks, anyway! |

I lost motivation.
Burdaki bağlamda olan şu.
The student stopped studying, then the subjects became more challenging. So he/she lost interest and therefore motivation.
