Cuban Latifundio Issues
Drawing a blank on how to express this phrase concisely.
Mil Gracias,

"The author puts the controversial [latifundios] question in the dock", with however you're treating latifundio (estates/?...) in brackets.

[see below]
=
given that the author squarely confronted the controversial issue of the ownership of large estates
___
"Al autor" appears to be an error for "el autor."
Also, the Spanish seems poorly written. For example, one would place "los latifundistas" on trial (or "take them to task" etc.) and not "el tema latifundario."
Suerte.

: I don't see how "sienta en el banquillo de los acusados" becomes "squarely confronted" (though that may be my fault!)

I think that my proposal conveys the intended sense in a way that is idiomatic in English. Of the other three suggestions, I think only Deborah's is really plausible English....

the author gives the topic of "latifundismo" a thorough grilling
a judge seats the accused in the dock so that he can be questioned or as we say, "grilled" -- here it's figurative
12 hrs
the author charges against controversial (latifundio) issue
Or author sits controversial issue in the dock
Another option
charges against/accuses/blames, etc
