Spanish term

hijos barones

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Ancient Greek Literature
The whole sentence is:
"Recluido en un rincón de palacio, sin amor, solitario, Edipo, cansado de soportar los maltratos de Eteocles y de Polinices, maldice a sus hijos barones: de él heredarán tan solo la discordia y la guerra."

Oedipus has two other children, Antigone and Ismene - they are not mentioned as being cursed, so I'm wondering if "hijos barones" means something less straightforward than it appears.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 male children
5 +3 sons
4 +2 male offspring

Discussion

Sandra Cifuentes Dowling May 16, 2006:
¿Alguien podría corregir el ingreso al glosario del término "barones" por "varones"? Así luce horrible y puede conducir a error.
Miguel Falquez-Certain May 15, 2006:
Varón en todo caso, porque barones son los nobles que tienen ese título (barón).

male children

think it means hijos varones
Peer comment(s):

agree Diana Arbiser : Looks like a typo, "barones" for "varones". So I agree (and Antigone and Ismene are both daughters, so it makes sense)

male offspring

varones not barones
Peer comment(s):

agree teju : I know the question is closed, but male offspring is a good answer. When you say children, you get a mental picture of little boys. Offspring fits much better.
