Spanish term

topes vivos

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Mining & Minerals / Gems
This is from the transcript of an interview with a Mexican rock mechanics consultant who works for a mining company.

Mecánica de rocas es el apoyo en el soporte de roca hacer el análisis estructural de la roca presente en el campo, en las obras mineras y con eso poder ayudar a la gente que se encuentra en los topes vivos en los rebajes de producción.

Could it be the rock face?

Thanks so much.

mine face / pit face

It certainly sounds like it, Paty. Tope in Mexican mining usage means the "face", but I think it's called the mine face, rather than the rock face.

In mining, the face is the surface where the mining work is advancing. In surface mining it is commonly called pit face, in underground mining a common term is mine face.

With "vivos", I suppose it might even mean "exposed face":

Definition of coal face

i. The mining face from which coal is extracted by longwall, room, or narrow-stall system.

See Also: face

ii. A working place in a colliery where coal is hewn, won, got, or gotten from the exposed face of a seam by face workers.

I couldn't find any definitions in Spanish, unfortunately.

Thanks Robert. I'm liking exposed face...

Thanks, Patricia.
agree Marie Wilson : I couldn't find any examples either. I suppose "vivos" means the active face, where the work is being done.

Thanks, Marie, yes, I understand rock and strata mechanics provide information vital to avoid failure and aid stability at the face.
agree neilmac : "Active coal face" gets a convincing number of hits....

Thanks, Neil, "active face" might be the way to go then, because we don't know what type of mines they are.
