analizarán en línea

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Clinical trials
Esas muestras de sangre se enviarán a un laboratorio. Se almacenarán congeladas y se analizarán o bien en línea o bien por lotes, como muy tarde 5 años después de la finalización del estudio.

I do not speak Spanish, but I am translating (into Russian) an English document which was translated from Spanish.
The above source Spanish sentence was translated into English as "These blood samples will be sent to a laboratory. They will be stored frozen and analysed either on-line or in batches, at the latest 5 years after the completion of the study."

I am not sure that contrasting "on-line" and "in batches" is correct, so I would like to ask whether "en línea" means "on-line" here, or does it mean something different?
I would be grateful if you could help me understand the source.

Discussion

Olga Derenko (asker) Mar 3, 2021:
Hi Aida, My text does not mention the method of analysis (automated or not); the sentence just informs the study patients that their blood samples may be tested not only during the clinical study, but also for up to 5 years after the end of the clinical study. There are no further details of the blood test method. Thank you for your suggestions and references! I guess "sequentially" might fit the context.
Stuart and Aida Nelson Mar 3, 2021:
Automated blood sampling Hi Olga, Does your text have something to do with automated blood sampling? I have found references to 'línea' in connection with automated blood sampling. I think you are right, 'on-line' does not seem to make sense in this context. Cheers, Aida

(will be analysed) individually

I am suggesting "individually" because it is the natural opposite of "in batches/lots). Rather than "online", which sounds like computer terminology, I would say "in-line", as in "IN-LINE PROCESSING OF FOOD PRODUCTS."
Although the example refers to food products, it could be used in other sectors as well.

So, the whole segment could be translated as:
"These blood samples will be sent to a laboratory. They will be stored frozen and analysed either individually (in line) or in batches, at the latest 5 years after completion of the study."

And, because "in line" is partially synonymous with "one at a time/individually"…
Example sentence:

But how can we minimise batching of blood tests?

continuously

En línea probably means here continuously, see references below:

In the continuous discrete system, where samples may be fed into the machine continuously and results obtained continuously, tube transport through the various analytical processes is fully automatic and in the multichannel analysers the tubes are washed SUPERNATANT TRANSFER DILUT ION/ INCU - REAGENT REAGENT ADDITION BATION ADDITION automatically before receiving further aliquots of sample. In the discontinuous discrete system the samples are processed in batches with manual transfer of batches from one stage to another

Samples can be processed singly, in batches, or continuously.

An automated analyser is a medical laboratory instrument designed to measure different chemicals and other characteristics in a number of biological samples quickly, with minimal human assistance. These measured properties of blood and other fluids may be useful in the diagnosis of disease.

Batch analysis means that multiple samples are tested in a ‘run’. In contrast, sequential analysis means samples are tested one after the other and results are reported in the same order.11 Continuous-flow analysis is a form of sequential analysis through a continuous stream at a constant rate, e.g. the AutoAnalyzer.

Or SEQUENTIALLY as above

Blood samples ...analysed either sequentially/continuously or in batches (by means of automated analysis)
