Discussion

Maria-Jose Pastor (asker) Aug 3, 2012:
a Colombian University Transcript for the study of a degree in Law. Other Courses for 2nd year of study:
Colombian Constitutional Law,
Civil Law (Property),
Humanities,
Judicial Sociology,
Judicial Logic,
Colombian Political System.

Criminal law (your suggestion) is studied in the 3rd and 4th years - thank you anyway.
TechLawDC Aug 3, 2012:
CONTEXT, please. The context will point us to the true answer. What is the degree being studied for? What are a few of the similar courses?

This is a fairly standard rendering.

In case this may prove useful:

In most Spanish-speaking jurisdictions the study of criminal law ("derecho penal") is divided into two parts: la Parte General deals with the theory of crime ("Teoría del Delito"), while la parte Especial deals with crimes per se, as they are defined (and punished!) in the criminal code ("Los delitos y sus penas"). If this is indeed the case in Colombia, "Criminal Law" would not be an appropriate translation here, because that is "derecho penal", i.e., the umbrella term for these two areas of study.

disagree AllegroTrans : as the name of a course? I hardly think so

It's probably a course on what is known as the "Special part" of Criminal Law, i.e., a study of the actual crimes and misdemeanors set forth in the Criminal Code. But since we don't know the exact course content, I have provided the standard translation.
agree Charles Davis : Why on earth not? It's certainly a topic on which books and papers have been written.

Yes, indeed. It's a synonym of "criminal offense" and as I indicated to Allegro, the course probably deals with the "Parte Especial" of criminal law
neutral philgoddard : I'm with Allegro.

Penology; Criminology

Declined
Since it is not Criminal Law (according to Asker), or Sociology of Crime, then the only other college course I have heard of in a long career translating college transcripts is Penology (or perhaps Criminology).
(After all, this not a college set up by inmates of a prison, it is presumably a legitimate educational institution.)

Two definitions from Wikipedia:
(1) Penology (from the Latin poena, "punishment" and the suffix -logy, "study of") is a section of criminology that deals with the philosophy and practice[citation needed] of various societies in their attempts to repress criminal activities, and satisfy public opinion via an appropriate treatment regime for persons convicted of criminal offenses.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines penology as "the study of the punishment of crime and prison management", and in this sense it equivalent with corrections.
---
(2) Criminology (from Latin crīmen, "accusation"; and Greek -λογία, -logia) is the scientific study of the nature, extent, causes, and control of criminal behavior in both the individual and in society. Criminology is an interdisciplinary field in the behavioral sciences, drawing especially upon the research of sociologists (particularly in the sociology of deviance), psychologists and psychiatrists, social anthropologists as well as on writings in law.
Note from asker:
Thank you for your answer - however criminology is studied in the 3rd and 4th years.
