Also, I believe "ya" in this case is more properly translated as "now (deceased)."
Of course, in the previous phrase, it would be "the general's surviving CHILDREN."

Agreed that "hijos" can be generic for children. In this case it's not indicated whether there were females among the deceased "hijos", and there might have been only males. Thks ael :-)
