Discussion

David Brown Mar 29, 2009:
¿porque baja edad media? A personal opinion------It seems, once again, Spain is different, and depending on which history to believe, the high middle ages (alta) arose from the Dark Ages and the Late Middle Ages (Baja) in Spain was the later period towards the "modern era". Perhaps it is related to the Church as it was at its peak during the first period (alta) and began to lose its "universal" power by the end of the later period (baja).

agree David Ronder : Definitely. Historians call it "Later" when they want to make a point about the divisions not being as clear as we think, but this is the standard term. Sorry, just realised I've posted the same reference as you.

agree Andrea Nagy : This is the term. The period immediately preceding it is the High Middle Ages, this might explain the "alta/baja" used in Spanish.

agree David Brown : "Alta" is when they "began" which, strangely enough were called the "high Middle Ages" in English, and "baja" is when they finished

agree Rachel Fell : High Middle Ages were the middle, "peak" period, as David R. has said below - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Ages
