Hay dos versiones básicas de éste instrumento:

Estamos hablando de la Inquisición, y sin embargo, éste tipo de Garrote (el trístemente célebre Garrote Vil) fue usado en España hasta que en 1975 se abolió la pena capital con la muerte de cierto BASTARDO CABRÓN.

-La catalana, en la cual un punzón de hierro penetra y rompe las vértebras cervicales al mismo tiempo que empuja todo el cuello hacia delante aplastando la tráquea contra el collar fijo, matando así por asfixia o por lenta destrucción de la médula espinal. La presencia de la punta en la parte posterior no sólo no provoca una muerte rápida, sino que aumenta las posibilidades de una agonía prolongada. Fue usado hasta principios de éste siglo en Cataluña y en algunos países latinoamericanos. Se usa todavía en el Nuevo Mundo, sobre todo para la tortura policial (esa que dicen que no existe), pero también para ejecuciones.

Según el DRAE, ambas palabras se refieren tanto al instrumento como al procedimiento de castigo. En consecuencia, me parece que con decir "garrote" es suficiente.

1. m. Palo grueso y fuerte que puede manejarse a modo de bastón.
4. m. Procedimiento para ejecutar a los condenados comprimiéndoles la garganta con una soga retorcida con un palo, o mediante un artificio mecánico de parecido efecto.

garrote vil.
1. m. Condena a muerte de delincuentes, etc., ejecutados con garrote.
2. m. Instrumento para ejecutar a los condenados a muerte.

Sin emabrgo sí existe una sutil diferencia entre el garrote común u ordinario y el garrote vil como puedes leer aquí:

"...Entonces se establecieron **tres tipos de garrote: ordinario, vil y noble**, en función cada uno de ellos del ceremonial requerido para el traslado del reo hasta el patíbulo. El noble exigía que el reo fuera trasladado en caballería y con la cabeza descubierta, mientras que **en el vil debía hacerse en pollino, montado el reo al revés y con la cabeza cubierta**. Al cabo prevaleció el garrote vil como denominación genérica. ..."

Adding "vil" to the English might underscore you are talking about the Spanish instrument devised for strangulation (but you might have to say so to make it clear).

If you search for "garrote vil" +strangulation in Google you will come up with some hits that show instances in which the Spanish name is used with the explanation "death by strangulation" or something to that effect in parenthesis.

Still, the correct English term is garrote, gsrroting is strangulation with a garrote.
