Spanish term

trató su pliego como embajador

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics Argentine news article
Hello! I'm translating the following news article about the "180-degree turn" that the Argentine Government (under Alberto Fernandez) made with regards to its relations with Venezuela:

Alberto Fernández dijo que extrañaba a Hugo Chávez y horas después Argentina se abstuvo de condenar abusos del régimen de Maduro en la OEA
https://www.clarin.com/mundo/oea-condeno-abusos-regimen-chav...

But I'm having trouble understanding the phrase "trató su pliego como embajador."

Here's the context:

"El gobierno decidió enviar como representante ante la OEA al combativo dirigente Carlos Raimundi, quien, cuando el Senado trató su pliego como embajador ante el organismo montó una férrea defensa del chavismo."

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Chema Nieto Castañón Jun 30, 2020:
Literally, pliego would be here the document with the presidential nomination sent to the Senate for consideration / confirmation. In context, it refers to consider (tratar) Raimundi's nomination (su pliego).
María Teresa Taylor Oliver (asker) Jun 30, 2020:
Thanks, Phil. So "pliego" here would be "position"? I've never seen "pliego" used like that before... It sounds weird, but then again Argentine Spanish is weird (to me). :)

I think "trató" is "debated".
