Levantar el evento

Spanish to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Drag scene, Mexican
Hola a todos,

Hago una traducción de un clip de la serie méxicana "La más draga" y usan la expresión "levantar el evento", qué quiere decir? Es como "to be the life of the party" o "to hype a party". Estaría súper agradecida. Dejaré el enlace para el clip abajo:

If you go to 22:35 in this link! It's a colloquial Mexican phrase that is used a lot in the drag scene! Any help would be appreciated.

Marie Wilson Nov 18, 2020:
Like Phil, I had never heard of this, but found it here:
Turn the party: To captivate, enthrall, and overwhelm an audience with one’s fabulosity.https://enterthequeendom.com/glossary
I have listened to more, but I'm still not convinced it is right here.
Ariana Piantanida Nov 18, 2020:
I strongly disagree. Although they were talking about the arrangement of the event at some point, if you listen a few minutes later, you will hear that the event was already in progress and that the absent queen was busy working somewhere else. They called her because they needed her to "levantar el evento" and she declined and said "no se van a colgar de mi fama", meaning she is more famous and the others needed her to come to the event to hype the party/levantar el evento. In my experience with the drag scene, this happens a lot and in Argentina we have similar phrases such as "levantar la fiesta". This is why I think that "turn the party" is the best option.
Marie Wilson Nov 18, 2020:
Set up sounds good, Neil. I can hear it clearly. It¡s basically chismorreo, that the Red Rabbits are pissed off as they think that the other one didn't want to co-organise an event.
neilmac Nov 18, 2020:
My take If Marie's idea is right, it could be "put the event on/arrange the event/set up the event... etc.
Marie Wilson Nov 18, 2020:
It seems more on the lines of organise. The preceding part is roughly: hablé con las coneja rojas y están molestas contigo, si tu estás molesta con ellas, pq no quisiste hacer un evento con ellas....que no les quisiste levantar el evento.
philgoddard Nov 17, 2020:
I can't hear it either. Could you give us a few sentences of transcription?
Juan Jacob Nov 17, 2020:
Van 2 veces que planteas la pregunta: la primera vez no había enlace, esta vez, pues en el 22'35'' no oigo nada de eso. Aclara.
En todo caso: levantar puede significar 1.- organizar, producir; 2.- hacerlo mejor, mejorarlo.

Turn the party

This is the best option, it is commonly used among drag queens from the TV reality show RuPaul's drag race. It seems that they were talking about inviting a popular drag queen to hype the party and she declined.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : But what does this mean? I've never seen "turn" used in this way.

This is drag queen slang and, as Marie pointed out, it means to captivate, enthrall, and overwhelm an audience with one’s fabulosity. The event was for charity and they needed this successful queen to hype the party performing and raise more money.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think this is the best option too. I've heard it before on Ru Paul series, there is some translation loss but I will compensate in other areas. Gracias Ariana!"

(Mex. & Cuba) Steal the show

I know that, colloquially on Cuba, 'levantar' means 'robar', so to pinch or nick, but query in Mexico....

Otherwise, thumbs up on the Earl's Court Road in West London: 'TV?' 'Yes, TV (transvestite)' !
Example sentence:

Drag queen reporter Pissi Myles stole the show at Trump's impeachment hearing

An eight-year-old drag queen is getting a lot of love online, after stealing the show during a Bianca Del Rio comedy set.
