Spanish term

consulta - (consult vs. consultation)

Spanish to English Medical General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Es un texto sobre SIDA, y se refiere a consultas que pueden ser con médicos, enfermeras o asistentes sociales. No estoy segura de qué término sería más correcto, ya que encuentro las definiciones bastante similares. El texto se va a usar en varios países.

Gracias!

Discussion

philgoddard Nov 5, 2010:
I think the suggestion of "visits" may be more appropriate than "consultations", especially if it's (say) a social worker visiting a housebound patient. But you haven't given the full context, so it's difficult to know.
Carol Gullidge Nov 5, 2010:
but there's absolutely nothing wrong with "appointments", whether past, present or future, and missed or otherwise
Carol Gullidge Nov 5, 2010:
It can't be "consult" as that is a verb
liz askew Nov 5, 2010:
appointments are made for the future, but can be missed in the past. i.e. I missed/forgot about my appointment last week.
Noni Gilbert Riley Nov 5, 2010:
Y tb puedes fallar Not everyone keeps their appts!
Elizabeth Ardans (asker) Nov 5, 2010:
Siempre se refiere a consultas ya realizadas (que hay que registrar en una planilla), tal vez me equivoco, pero creo que appointment da más la sensación de algo a futuro... Gracias a todos por las sugerencias!

visit

Es que creo que no lo pondría así, sino que hablaría de "visits to the doctor" etc.

agree philgoddard : This may be more appropriate, depending on the context.

meetings

another suggestion, in my opinion you don't have either consultations or with nurses or social workers and in fact the person "consultant"is an expert in his medical specialty. I think we don't make "appointments" or "visit" nurses either so their inclusion in this sentence knocks out several possibilities. Meetings however, can be had with all three mentioned

Well, this is an interesting one,

I would think "appointment" could be suitable.

Normally consulations are with doctors/consultants. When I have seen a nurse I usually have an "appointment", not a "consultation" :)

just a suggestion!
