It's been around for years. It was introduced as a unified ID number that would replace our tax ID number, voter registration number, social security number, passport number, and so on. Hasn't happened yet.

As GoodWords, and more: CURP is a very strange freak-mexican creation. Everybody ask for it, and nobody knows what is it for. Someday, I presume, it'll be our ID card number, wich doesn't exist in Mexico.

I'm afraid I hazarded a guess. Social insurance number or ID Card number is the equivalent I could think of here in Gibraltar (UK).

I have an FM2 here and a curp already but I wondered what the equivalent would be in english as this isn´t something I´ve come accross in UK or USA.

agree Nelida Kreer : I believe that asker should not look for an equivalent, bcse there isn´t any, but for an apt translation, and yours seems to be it. Perhaps just "population registration nr." might suffice.

ID Card /Social insurance number

Sounds to me like the Spanish DNI -Documento de identidad. Identity Card-ID card.
