Duo de Mar

Spanish to English Other Food & Drink
Hola!
Estoy traduciendo un menú de un restaurante italiano. Los nombres de los platos son bastante "poéticos" por así decirlo. Venía bien encontrando ideas para los nombres de los platos pero con este se me complicó...
Son dos cazuelas de diferentes mariscos...
"sea duo"? "sea duet"? Ninguna de esas opciones me parece "appealing"... aunque quizás sea porque no me gustan los mariscos... Busco algo que suene mejor o confirmación de alguna de mis dos opciones.
Desde ya, muchas gracias

Muriel Vasconcellos Aug 1, 2017:
In part, it's a descriptive explanation Since they are two entirely different stews, instead of a single dish, I think it's important to translate the phrase.
Mónica Hanlan (asker) Aug 1, 2017:
@Robert Thank you! "Alfred's Little Ribbons" made me laugh!
Mónica Hanlan (asker) Aug 1, 2017:
@Bill Yes Bill, I need to get the idea of two. Thanks!
Robert Carter Aug 1, 2017:
Although I posted a suggestion, I actually agree with Phil, though. It's probably best to leave all of the names of your dishes in Spanish if the menu provides a description. Goulash, chow mein, spaghetti bolognese, coq au vin, gazpacho, the list of foreign food names in English is endless.
It seems to be standard procedure in the restaurant business, anyway. You wouldn't expect to find "Alfred's Little Ribbons" on an Italian restaurant menu instead of "Fettuccine Alfredo".
Mónica Hanlan (asker) Aug 1, 2017:
@Phil Thank you for your suggestion. It does have a description of the dish. Leaving it in Spanish is an option then. Thank you!

If you'll excuse the French reference, we had a very similar question about "duos" recently:

I was in a minority of one, but my answer was chosen :-)
william hill Aug 1, 2017:
Neptune's duo / Neptune's duo / Ocean's duet or duo / Oceanic duet or duo ... do you have to get the idea of two?
philgoddard Aug 1, 2017:
What format does the rest of the menu take? Is it the name of each dish, followed by a description? In that case, you should leave it in Spanish.

Seafood Duet

Peer comment(s):

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : I like it, even though your examples are grilled instead of stewed. At least it exists in the vernacular.

Seafood X 2 - Twofold seafood - Seafood duo

It is not necessarily "romantic". Italians often use "di mare" instead of "frutti di mare", which means "seafood", and it has been translated literally into Spanish.
So "seafood" is the right word for "di mare".

seafood couplet

Just a thought, inspired by your suggestion that these are "poetical" names and the idea that these are two slightly different but complementary dishes.

couplet |ˈkəplət|
noun
two lines of verse, usually in the same meter and joined by rhyme, that form a unit.

Oxford Dictionary of English (British)
Note from asker:
As a Shakespeare fun, I like "couplet"... the question is if the typical tourist would get it... Thank you for your answer.

Seafood Stew Duo

No Goigle hits. Just an idea that might work if you don't want to leave the name of the dish in Spanish, and that could fit in well if the other dishes on the menu end up having quirky names in English.

agree william hill : If it has to be translated, I think this one fits

leave it in Spanish

See the discussion entries. There's no exact equivalent in English, Mónica says the menu goes on to provide a description, and leaving it in Spanish just makes it sound more interesting and exotic.
