: It's also given as a translation here https://tureng.com/en/spanish-english/industria mecánica and I think mechanical engineering sounds better in this context

Thanks, Anthea. As mentioned, many of my UK contemporaries had been into mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering.

Yes. Your first sentence is a valid point. Some of the staff might well be 'machinists' (as well as payroll clerks and tea boys / girls etc.etc.) though - when not on strike in the UK - would arguably be part of a broader mechanical engineering scene.
