Wasn't sure which category to put this in.
I can't quite decide on a translation for "intervención" where it refers to different members of an Academic Jury being given the floor to voice their opinions.
An example sentence would be: "las intervenciones suelen ser de 5 minutos". I have various options, from "intervention", to "participation", to "comments" and more "out there" variants such as "say their piece".
Ideally I want a noun, since verbal constructions will force me to rejig the phrase and it recurs frequently.
I have reviewed various glossary entries but am yet to be convinced.
Thanks as always!

Comment: "Thanks, Joss! In the end I've opted to give you the points, because out of the options I liked this was the one I hadn't thought of. In the text itself I went for both contribution and intervention in different sentences. Thanks everybody!"

Another option that might work.
From Oxford Spanish dictionary:
intervención femenino
A
1 (participación) intervention; la inmediata intervención de los bomberos the swift intervention of the fire service; se ha probado su intervención en el atraco his involvement in the robbery has been proved; su intervención en el congreso fue muy aplaudida her speech to the conference was warmly applauded;

--------------------------------------------------
'Speeches are generally 5 minutes' even...

Or 'Talk(s)'; but that might be too informal.

BTW, have no idea why it's bolding and underlining everything?!

Example sentence:
Speaches are generally 5 minutes.
Note from asker:
Thanks, James. I'm not sure why it's underlining and bolding, either... but it's kinda cool :-) |

question and answer period / examination
This is valid in the case that you are referring to an academic jury for a thesis presentation: "The jury members conduct a dissertation examination within one month after the dissertation has been submitted. The dissertation examination consists of the presentation of the dissertation and the following question-answer session with the jury members." http://www.ku.edu.tr/ku/index.php?Itemid=2041&id=1055&option...
Discussion
Contribution and intervention are the options I most like so far.
I hesitate over a word like "speech" since if they are making comments from the floor, then they shouldn't be making speeches.
Contributions might be best if you have to have a noun...
