49. During 1984-1989, the disparities among the average benefits of the various government retirement funds decreased somewhat. The average level of BPS benefits experienced a relative increase and those of the military and police funds were reduced. Despite this, there are still significant differences. In 1989, the average monthly pension from BPS was US$76, while the average pension from the military fund was US$183. The lower BPS average payment is partly explained by the lower level of the old-age pension, a program without funding and with relative easy access for people over 65.
