A canapé on a menu. There are a few unfamiliar items I would like some input on to help me investigate. I suppose that this might simply be a square-shaped piece of morcilla, except that I can't imagine how that might work. I'm just not sure where to go with this, or if I am missing something. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. UK Eng please. Thanks a lot.

Andrew Bowden May 27, 2009:
My suggestion would be to say 'Spanish Black Pudding' because Morcilla is not exactly like black pudding, often it is made with rice for example.
In these situations i really try to contact the chef directly and get them to break-down exactly what these things are.
Good luck,
AGB
James A. Walsh May 26, 2009:
Parcels all the way! I think a slight variation of Lisa's answer would do the trick:
'Morcilla (Black pudding) Filo Parcels', or just 'Morcilla (Black pudding) Parcels' are both spot-on I reckon.

Check out the hits for 'Morcilla (Black pudding)': http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Morcilla (Black pudding)&so...

I also think including both 'Morcilla' and 'Black pudding' in the translation will only serve to cover all bases. More specifically, 'Black pudding' lovers will instantly be home - but will be presented with a whole new Spanish twist to their old favourite. Similarly, things can only take on a whole new English meaning for English-speaking 'Morcilla' lovers.

Hope this helps :)

Parcel By the way, thank you all for your help so far... Parcels makes sense, and Kathryn's input on "in a blanket" is very interesting, since it is akin to "pañuelo" in a way. Lots of useful options to think about. Thanks.
Kate Major Patience (asker) May 26, 2009:
Morcilla vs Black Pudding It hadn't occurred to me to use "morcilla" in this translation. I will take that into account. My only query is, surely those who would be willing to eat black pudding have always eaten it with that name? Those who wouldn't- won't they just get a nasty surprise? I mean, I only tried black pudding in Spain, but still... Surely at least a gloss would be necessary?

These parcels look like a folded handkerchief I suppose. Have a look in Google images for "morcilla parcel" / "filo parcel"

The black pudding surprise in ***morcilla filo parcels** was a yummy quartet of party sociables perched on a spinach purée, the earthy whiff of pig's blood sweetened by apple sauce.

agree James A. Walsh : I definitely think 'Parcel' is the way to go here - it’s succinct, yet punchy. Perhaps: 'Morcilla (Black pudding) Filo Parcels' would cover all bases? Good call :))

Black sausage turnover

I don't know many Brits that know what a morcilla is.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lisa McCarthy : I'd rather eat a morcilla than a black sausage any day, even if I didn´t know what it was! ;-) I think anybody who's into their nosh may have a good idea anyway.

I'm not sure if the dish "pigs in a blanket" is known in the UK: basically hot dogs/weiners/frankfurters wrapped in bread (nowadays quite popular with refrigerated crescent roll dough, but formerly used sliced white bread).

I now feel obliged to include a little definition for anyone out there who doesn't know what a blood sausage really is: blood sausage - A link sausage made of pig's blood, diced pork fat, and other ingredients such as onions and breadcrumbs. Also called blood pudding. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/blood sausage

Black pudding or blood pudding is an English term for sausage made by cooking blood with a filler until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled. It is also called blood sausage (first attested in 1868, perhaps influenced by German Blutwurst). Although "blood sausage" is often labeled as a North American term, it is also found in English (e.g., in the story "The Name-Day" by Saki). "Blood sausage" is also used as a term for similar blood-based solid foods around the world.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_sausage

neutral neilmac : You missed my jocular point. "Blood" tiene un matiz negativo para los nativos angloparlantes del Reino Unido.

Oh, you were being funny and I didn't get it. I wasn't aware of that connotation for U.K. Thanks :)
neutral Lisa McCarthy : I'm afraid I have to agree with Neil on this one. Using ´blood' is fine for giving an explanation of what it really is, but not appetising on a menu and generally not seen.

Ok, point taken. For me, personally, morcillas are never appetising in any language!
