Spanish term

alce

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Railway engineering
From a legal document from Spain for translation to British English. In the field of railway track laying. A drawing seems to show a small structure in metal profile on which the "ventana" is supported.

"Además las ventanas se sitúan sobre alces de distinto grosor lo que permite también variar su altura respecto de la viga transversal."

I can't find any solid webrefs to back up this answer, but the general context - and in particular the mention of "alces de distinto grosor" - very clearly points to 'shims', which are used to make fine adjustments to the vertical position of parts of a structure.

Also, there's an obvious relationship between 'alce' and 'alzar'.
