Meeting minutes - Association of Condominium Owners

Any ideas to make this sound English?

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jun 17, 2003:
plafn It's not a letter...the owner was actually present at the meeting so she was probaby addressed directly.

By the way, can't plafn be translated as "ceiling light"?
Non-ProZ.com Jun 17, 2003:
Payment of the related invoice was thereby requested How about "Payment of the related invoice was thereby requested". That way I avoid confusion over who is being requested to pay the bill, right?

inviting her in these terms

In full:

It was reported that a ceiling had been damaged by a firm carrying out works for the owner of apartment no. 13, and those attending were told that the costs of repair should be paid by the firm that caused the damage or, failing that, by the owner of the apartment who had the work done, and she [the owner] was invited in these terms to pay the corresponding invoice.

I agree, Katherine, that \"payment of the related invoice was thereby requested\" is much more satisfactory.

I was being lazy in translating \"plafón\" as \"ceiling\" without checking it up. Eurodicautom defines it as \"a plain lighting fitting of dimensions usually not exceeding 40 cm, intended to be fixed directly on a vertical or horizontal surface\" and translates it as \"bulkhead fitting\", but you\'re probably right about \"ceiling light\"

disagree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : I think the le us Usted and formal and they are writing directly to the person, not talking about her in the third person. The owners are being asked to vote on the wording of the letter.

I hate to disagree with you, Jane, since I respect your opinions, but the asker specifically said that these were minutes of a meeting, so we're dealing with the report of a discussion here.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Gillian for all your effort and Jane too (you were just on the wrong track:-)))) Thanks to the rest of you too. I'm going to use "payment of the related invoice was thereby requested" and I'm going to ask for clarification about the plafón which can be translated a number of ways!"

We hereby invite you to attend a meeting of the shareholders

or whatever

sorry, missed it

Beginning of paragraph:

\"We hereby inform you that a ceiling was damaged when........

and we therefore request that you pay the amount of this bill.\"

That\'s it.

The person to whom the letter is being written is the person who contracted the people who damanged the ceiling and therefore he/she is being asked to foot the bill...

Is this reported speech or direct speech? There is no way to tell whether the condo owners are being asked to approve a letter to this particular owner or whether this is the text to the owner. I have a feeling that it might be a letter to her/her. YOu can\'t really tell from your paragraph but you might be able from your context.

neutral Gillian Hargreaves (X) : Umm, are you sure? These are minutes, not a notice of a meeting.

yeah, it's the bill; but the idea is "We hereby ask that you" is what I meant

asking thereby for the due bill to be paid

Entiendo que es algo formal.
No queda claro a quien se refiere, si a la
propietaria o a la empresa.

Payment of the relative invoice was thereby requested

I think your suggestion sounds OK

or even: \"she was thereby requested to settle the relative/corresponding invoice\"

which amounted to a request for payment of the invoice in question.

or, as you suggest
thereby requesting payment of the invoice in question.
