las hojas de las puertas
Hello,
i am translating a paper on a chapel found in valencia.
the phrase is - las hojas de las puertas, resueltas al estilo marroqui ....
my doubt here is las hojas ? can it be as simple as the leaves of the door? could it be panels? i have seen shutters but I think this is just for windows.
any help would be greatly appreciated

the doors
Strictly speaking it does mean "leaves of the doors", but I don't think we'd usually say that. It just means the doors.

: Strictly speaking, I would say it means panels. But if the panels are in a certain style, so presumably are the entire doors.

: Yes, as opposed to doors and frames, or doorways.

Spanish term (edited):
las hojas de las puertas
the doors of the gates
Se refiere a puertas grandes, justamente ‘gates’, o portones en español, formados a su vez por dos hojas, en inglés ‘puertas’

From a technical standpoint, yes, you can use "leaves" for the swinging parts of the door, so a double door might be described as a two leaf door. Door manufacturers refer to the whole system (frame, hinges, leaves, etc.) as a "door", and specifically refer to this part as a leaf.
I think it will also be understood that way in the architectural context you're talking about.

: And "leaves of the doors" gets plenty of hits from what look like reliable sources. Other options would be dumbing down IMHO.

: Agree with Neil. This looks like a technical text, so "leaves" is entirely appropriate here.
