Spanish term

hotel-privé

Spanish to English Other Architecture German influence in Argentine architecture
I don't know how to translate this into UK English. This is the context:

Thanks for your ideas.

Mariana, estoy mucho más familiarizada con 'petit-hotel', y también he visto 'petit-hotel privé'. En qué se diferencia el 'hotel privé' del 'petit hotel'?
Leonardo Lamarche Jun 30, 2010:
Jenni, Excellent comments and suggestions.
Jenni Lukac (X) Jun 30, 2010:
Maybe the best way to handle the problem is to say "a style private of residences he referred to as ..." It sounds like a very particular use of these words to me. If the had several out buildings, stables, etc. one could possibly call them estates or estate homes, but I'd still keep the word if the architect himself used it to describe his work.
Mariana Solanet (asker) Jun 30, 2010:

private residence hotels

I'm sticking my neck out a bit here, but I think this fits. The other translations could be "boarding house" or "private hotel that reserves the right to choose their guests". Some small boutique hotels like to call themselves hotel privé but you've got that covered. The French concept is living in a small room or a large suite as a long-term resident, rather than a guest. Very genteel in the sense that one always eats out and has a lot of services and at the same time rather spartan, as one cannot accumulate things as one would in a house.

townhouse

The asker has explained that they're not hotels.

A "hôtel particulier" is a townhouse in French, and I think this means the same thing. You could translate "petit-hotels y hotels-privés" both as "townhouses", since the only difference appears to be their size.

Thanks.
agree Evans (X) : I think this is the most likely interpretation, also sometimes translated as "mansions", but I would go with townhouse.

Yes, mansions might well be an alternative.
