I don't think "grub and bub" sounds MUCH more colloquial than the given expression. It IS colloquial as well - the whole phrase I mean, even though, taken separately, the words may sound quite neutral.

: BUT Deborah, the idea (in Russian saying) is quite opposite - eating means wasting your drink as it prevents a person from getting drunk :-)) i.e. keeping the head IS bad :-))
