Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hello

I'm not sure how to translate the above in this context. Does it have sarcastic undertones?

"Явиться в бюро по трудоустройству в моем нормальном виде (чистые джинсы, пиджак фиолетового бархата) еще не значит, что инспектор лишит меня пособия, это решает комиссия; но он может настучать рапорт в комиссию, и через полгода чертова машина может выбросить меня из числа облагодетельствованных. Не следует смущать инспектора - бедняк должен выглядеть как бедняк."

Delayed response Sorry, Victor. Thanks to чертова машина implies that it is the чертова машина that is responsible for the lapse from grace, but there is a certain ambiguity as to whose favor is lost (in the English translation, that is).

Good question, Victor I attempted to convey the agent by means of the "Thanks to,,," construction. Lapse is a peculiar verb. It's an intransitive with a rather passive vibe. The circumstances surrounding the lapsing would vary. In the case of "lapse from grace," even though it reads like an active construction, this is actually something that happens to someone rather than something that someone does (although they can certainly DO something that contributes to the end result).

how's passive constrction supposed to be built with 'to lapse'? One may lapse into silence but I don't think Edichka can be lapsed from grace BY THE MACHINE... rather sput/kicked off/sprung from the loins (and he felt so compfy when in the womb) into the harsh world without social benefits :)

человек, который оказывает кому-то покровительство/ помощь из милости; (Толковый словарь, Ожегов)
тут есть еще момент: спасительная помощь, доброе дело - и близко это к слову charity, good deed, boon (одолжение)
