Russian term

вжимаясь в тень

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Хозяин вошел внутрь, оставив дверь открытой.
"Только бы он не увидел меня," - вжимаясь в тень, думал Пинн. Потом, собравшись с духом, прошмыгнул в дверь.

Dear colleagues!
I can hardly come up with something better than 'squeezing himself against the dark wall', which is not really what I'm happy with. Please help!

P.S. Время происходит ночью: герой пытается проникнуть в дом.

SirReaL Mar 1, 2006:
Это, конечно, литература, и все такое, но "вжаться в тень" - это не по-русски. Мое ИМХО.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Mar 1, 2006:
To Mikhail: I think the Russian phrase sounds very good. There are 143 страниц на русском для "вжался в тень" in Google.

pressing himself deep into the shadow

Можно также попробовать "pressing himself against the wall, as he tried to melt into the shadow", но это немного длинновато

agree Dorene Cornwell : I might say :pressing himself further into the shadows" or even possibly "squeezing himself further ..."

sticking against the shadow on the wall

Если там угол, очень хорошо звучало бы "sticking (himself) into a dark corner"

In Russian, "sticking against the wall" would be "прижимаясь к стене" or "прилепившись к стене". I understand "вжимаясь в тень" as roughly similar to "прижимаясь к стене," hence my translation.

Here are some examples.

Continue through the deli, through the hallway, and exit to the outside. Proceed south, ***sticking against the wall***. Clear anyone you see and re-enter the ...

I suppose that "to stick against the wall" is different from "to stick against the shadow on the wall." I appreciate the peer comments. Perhaps I got carried away with the imagery of it all :)

Я бы хотел высказать одну мысль, не ради спора, конечно (все и так понятно), но из любопытства. Скажите, люди добрые, "вжаться в тень" - это действительно звучит нормально, по-русски, грамотно? Очень большие у меня сомнения.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Larisa Migachyov : doesn't sound right - not the way a native speaker would say it

Thank you, Larisa. I understand that you are helping the asker, however, would you please be more constructive and/or fair with your approach, i.e. post your own answer and/or comment on more than one answer, respectively. I would appreciate that.
neutral Dorene Cornwell : I agree with Larisa: this is probably not how a native speaker would say it, but I can imagine certain characters who would try to stick to the shadow on the wall. It would be hard to guess whether Andrew is working with that kind of character here.
