Поговаривали, будто пустынник обладает удивительной способностью перевоплощения и может заставить любого видеть себя именно так, а не иначе.

Иными словами: что этот 'пустынник' внушает человеку, таким человек его и видит.
Никак не выходит нормально сформулировать - пособите, please!
