Нас было помещено в каждую церковь до 2000 чел., где были устроены нары до 3-х этажей, так что получалось сильное воспарение. Мы все остались больные от такого воздуха и сквозняка, а дети до 14 лет падали как мухи и медицинской помощи не было для такого количества больных.

This is a case of a distorted word usage in the Russian source. As Yuri noted it should be "испарения", because "воспарение" is something very different, it's from "воспарить" meaning to soar high, it's a high-style word in Russian.
"Испарения" in this context is the stench of the human bodies when people are too crowded. It's a bad smell, and it's hard to breathe. I suppose the author wanted to say that the smell went higher and it was unbearable at the 3rd floor of that impromptu sleeping platforms.

: "Испарения" is hardly the phenomenon/process the author has implied; “спёртый воздух” is a much more suitable term to describe the situation

: I agree with your interpretation 100%, but can you imagine a semi-literate person who wrote the original use the word from the vocabulary of a chemistry professor? Ya dumayu, nado proshche

but this same semi-literate person used the word "воспарения" - so the person heard it somewhere. I ephasized the distorted word usage, which I think is important.

Comment: "This answer gave me the idea to substitute another "high-falutin'" word for vosparenie. Spasibo!"

Most likely, the author of the translated text has meant “спёртый воздух”, not "испарения”, of course. "Испарения” is something related to humidity, vapour, and water, while the author describes the situation where low oxygen and high carbon dioxide in atmosphere were much more uncomfortable and even dangerous for those being there than an increased percentage of air humidity (although this latter parameter is also of clear influence on a person , of course…)

exhalation/exhaled air
... there was a lot of exhalations/exhaled air ... The original has obviously been written by a fairly uneducated person, they should have said "ispareniya".

Stanislav Korobov
: Not ‘EXhalations’only! INhalations – as well (and even to a greater extent)... The biological role of oxygen INhaled is rather prevailing over the role of carbon dioxide EXhaled. Therefore, it was more important that those persons were INhaling air!

Discussion
(Still, to my eye, not the best way to use "воспарение").
