Russian term

смять в гармошку

Russian to English Art/Literary Geology
Если посмотреть на физическую карту - увидим, что вдоль западного побережья Северной Америки протянулись горные хребты. Здесь одна земная твердь "наехала" на другую, смяла ее в гармошку.

I'm trying to find a proper phrase in English - please advise.
Also, how would you translate 'земная твердь' here? The first version that comes to my mind is 'a tectonic plate', but this if much more scientific than 'земная твердь', which is rather 'elevated'.
Thank you!

What about 'wrinkling it up'?

causing it to crumple

or you could possibly say 'creating corrugations'.
Just trying to provide alternatives!

neutral Dorene Cornwell : Hard for me to think of lan masses rumpling. Corrugations sounds nice with tte rest of the register except that the accordion is part of the flavor of the piece.

agree Dylan Edwards : "Crumple" is good. Why not keep the accordion? Plenty of examples of "crumple(d) like an accordion", e.g. http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:KE76t-S34tQJ:www.tibet....
