community service

though I think the meaning of both previous entries is accurate, I personally would use either "community service" or "public service."

Thanks Ravindra.
agree Tevah_Trans : Just make sure you word the rest right, because "community service" can also have a negative connotation in a sense that it can be a punishment by court, in lieu of time served, for a minor offense.

Good point! Community service is often sentenced as punishment for minor criminal offenses, and as such, you need to make sure that you word the rest appropriately. Thanks Tevah!

volunteering

A volunteer is someone who works for a community or for the benefit of environment primarily because they choose to do so. The word comes from France, and can also be translated as "will" (as in doing something out of ones own free will). Many serve through a non-profit organization – sometimes referred to as formal volunteering, but a significant number also serve less formally, either individually or as part of a group.

Volunteering comes in many forms: serving food at the local homeless shelter, providing computer technical support to a non-profit organization, acting in a leadership capacity on a charitable organization's board of directors or coordinating the emergency response in the case of a disaster. Around the world volunteer centers exist to support the voluntary sector and make a difference in the communities that they serve.

Socially Useful Productive Work

SUPW is an integral part of our school curriculum. The idea behind it is to
allow our students to give expression to their co-curricular interests and
aptitudes. Participation in one of the activities pertaining to SUPW is com-
pulsory. Some of these activities are managed by our own faculty and for
some we hire external resource persons. The conduct of such activities will
depend on the availability of resource persons. Activity is allotted on the basis
of student's aptitude as assessed by teachers, and once allotted they have to
continue as a member of that activity for the entire academic year.
