I just wondered if the above could mean "legal papers." Here it is in context, in an extract from a novel:
"Хозяин "Винслоу" - Коч решил продать "Винслоу", один из сорока двух больших билдингов, принадлежащих ему в Манхэттане. Нам, обитателям "Винслоу", выдали стандартные бумажки с просьбой освободить помещение. Давалось нам два месяца сроку.
