@Lara I believe that the solution (FORMWORK-COVERED SURFACE AREA) you have found really is the best in this context. Now to shuttering. I believe there was a misunderstanding. I am aware of the nuances of the word in English, but what I meant is that "formwork" is better because "shuttering/shuttered" is too specific (it only applies to wood), and the text you are translating (I have found it online :) ) talks about the more general process of using formwork. So the difference was not between "shuttered/shuttering" but between "shuttering/formwork".

iN THE MEANTIME: "Shurttering" is the process, but it is also used as a synonym for the mold. (English often turns "-ING" words into nouns to describe an item or tool.)
