Contextual, se poate adăuga circuit/side/winding/coil (nu știu care se potrivește cel mai bine în textul pe care îl traduci), dar primary funcționează și ca substantiv de sine stătător. Mai jos ai câteva explicații.

Transformator

Un transformator este un dispozitiv electric static care transferă energie electrică dintr-un circuit (primarul transformatorului) în altul (secundarul transformatorului), funcționând pe baza legii inducției electromagnetice.

Un transformator de tensiune cu o singură fază constă, în principiu, din două bobine electrice de sârmă, una denumită "înfășurarea primară" și alta numită "înfășurarea secundară". Pentru acest tutorial vom defini partea "primară" a transformatorului ca parte care de obicei necesită putere, iar "secundar" ca parte care de obicei furnizează energie. Într-un transformator de tensiune monofazat, primarul este de obicei partea cu tensiunea mai mare.

Transformer Basics (...)

A single phase voltage transformer basically consists of two electrical coils of wire, one called the “Primary Winding” and another called the “Secondary Winding”. For this tutorial we will define the “primary” side of the transformer as the side that usually takes power, and the “secondary” as the side that usually delivers power. In a single-phase voltage transformer the primary is usually the side with the higher voltage.

So a step-down transformer with 100 coils in the primary and 10 coils in the secondary will reduce the voltage by a factor of 10 but multiply the current by a factor of 10 at the same time.
