Discussion

MMFORREST Oct 17, 2008:
Tutor All our tutors have a teaching qualification or are working towards one while in employment, but not necessarily a degree in the subject they teach, which makes things confusing for me: I have colleagues in Adult Education that have no degree but a vocational qualification and most have a teaching course and qualification. For example the patchwork or cross stitch tutor. They do not have degrees in textiles. Us, language tutors, most foreign ones have degrees and MAs plus teaching qualifications. Some of my local native colleagues do not, the same applies for some foreign colleagues who teach their native language ( they can be housewives with a Baccalaureate level of education, nurses, engineers, researchers, anything, ). Generally our service prefers to employ tutors with a degree as our standards are very high. Personally I do not like this term, as I am a teacher ! 
My husband ( who has a degree + an MA ) is a permanent teacher in a sixth form college and is a tutor to a group of students ( similar to the Romanian “diriginte” ).
A Word For I (X) Oct 16, 2008:
Tutor Yes, tutor is one good possiblity for U.K. English. But in the United States at least anyone can be a tutor at various levels of education, even without a college degree in the subject. Usually a college major in the subject or a certain number of college credits in the subject is required by private tutoring companies and for after-school tutors employed in the public schools or charter schools but they also hire tutors even before they have graduated and received their bachelor's degree. An M.A. at the least is required for any post-secondary teaching, university or pubic community college. Private schools and vocational schools might not follow these conventions either depending on how reputable they are. And arts & vocational schools, etc. may rely on some combination of number of years of career experience and education.

As always Some terms are valid for U.K. English & others for U.S. English. The challenge is finding a suitable term for the target dialect, or a dialect-neutral term for international English.
Mihaela Ghiuzeli Oct 16, 2008:
Tutor Interesant ! "Tutor" aici poate fi oricine dar "instructor" in invatamantul de adulti are un "teaching credential" specializat iar in cel de colegiu, un Master's; "incumbent" is out of question; numai in politica se vorbeste de asa ceva.
MMFORREST Oct 15, 2008:
Mihaela Ghiuzeli Oct 15, 2008:
Instructor Nu va contrazic pentru ca nu stiu cum e in UK dar aici "instructor" e folosit si in invatamantul pentru adulti cat si in "community colleges"; eu predau la colegiu( "community college") si suntem numiti"instructors"; m-a numit cineva din cadrul colegiului "professor" si era "sa cad pe spate".
MMFORREST Oct 15, 2008:
Instructor means a non qualifid teacher in the UK. I was epmloyed with this "instructor" status when Romania was not in the EU.
A Word For I (X) Oct 15, 2008:
profesor de liceu = teacher or instructor. Note: "teacher on staff" below also.
Mihaela Bordea (asker) Oct 15, 2008:
profesor de liceu
Nina Iordache Oct 15, 2008:
Despre ce nivel ar fi vorba? Universitar? Ca atunci as avea un alt raspuns...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.

incumbent teacher

RESOLVED by D. Buytaert that the School Board of Independent School District No. 94, pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 122A.40, Subdivision 5, that the 1.0 FTE Title One teaching contract and/or substitute teaching position of Sheila Tan, probationary/substitute teacher in Independent School District No. 94, is hereby terminated at the close of the 2006-2007 school year, or upon the return of the incumbent teacher, whichever occurs first.

Note from asker:
am intr-o adeverinta de tradus ca XXX a fost profesor titular la liceul ...in perioada ... iar incumbent sugereaza mai mult ca respectivu ocupa functia la momentul actual, deci nu prea sunt sigura
