eagle

Perhaps, it is 'burung elang' instead of 'burung gilam'.
'burung elang' generally translated into 'eagle' in English, but it's species is numerous, e.g, 'Ictinaetus malayensis' (helang hitam/black eagle), elang botak (bold eagle) etc,.

Hope my guessing help.
Peer comment(s):

neutral yam2u : elang/helang botak => bald eagle, no?

(paddy-)field heron [burung gelam]

- just a suggestion, based on a possible alternative spelling.

- another name for burung gelam in Malay is 'pucung bendang'.

heron => pucung

paddy/padi-field => bendang/sawah
Peer comment(s):

neutral #41698 (LSF) : if 'puchong bendang', it is 'cinnamon bittern' in English.

well, perhaps not too far off then. the scientific name for 'burung gelam' given in my DK Birds of the World Encycl is 'Ixobrychus Cinnamomeus'.
neutral Kardi Kho : I think both of you are correct. burung gelam/pucong bendang is Ixobrychus Cinnamomeus and it's cinnamon bittern in English.
