Any of the various classes (esp. Bryopsida) of very small, green bryophytes having stems with leaflike structures and growing in velvety structures on rocks, trees, moist ground, etc. The term "muscus" was also used for "musk"= a substance with a strong, penetrating odor obtained from the male deer.
