Japanese term

遠隔期

Japanese to English Medical Medical (general) Surgical outcomes
皆様へ、
いつもお世話になっております。
今度、遠隔期についての質問がありますので、よろしくお願いします。

I think 遠隔期 would be translated as "long-term" outcomes, but recently, I have come across studies that have translated this as "medium-term" or "mid-term" outcomes. the translation in these cases was done by a native Japanese speaker. I think the use of 長期 for "long-term" outcomes is straightforward, but would like some further guidance regarding the nuance of 遠隔期.

Context:
可能であれば遠隔期成績すなわち弁尖の耐久性はどうなのかという論文も検討する
サイズを選択しなければ,遠隔期の逆流再発する可能性がある

では、引き続き、どうぞ、よろしくお願いします。

Discussion

Dr Sarai Pahla, MBChB (asker) Apr 2, 2017:
Oh, thank you Port City - this is an excellent point and has given me a greater understanding of the term! Thank you so much!!
Port City Apr 2, 2017:
Where 遠隔期 is translated as "mid term", there may be a reference to a point where a longer time has elapsed from a surgery than the point where the 遠隔期 refers to.
Dr Sarai Pahla, MBChB (asker) Apr 1, 2017:
I will leave this question open until someone submits the term and earns their points, even though I already have the required confirmation :)

本来「遠隔期」には、長短の定義はないと思われます。

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "cinefil様、今、ちゃんと分かりましたので、いつものように感謝しています。"

post-discharge period

I think here the distance/remoteness (遠隔) refers to the fact the patient is no longer in the healthcare facility. This is why you can find mid-term and long-term events.
Note from asker:
Thanks for this response, David! I like this interpretation and certainly learnt a lot just by asking this question.
