Japanese term

"10数億"

Japanese to English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Is this 10 x 100 million? The context is a very short sentence in an interview about a company's losses in 2008: 赤字幅10数億。

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

sounds more natural to me

agree Miho Ohashi : This sounds just fine to me for such a vague expression as 10数億.

Japanese term (edited): \\\\\\\"10数億\\\\\\\"

several billion yen

It just means it could be in the range from 10 to 19億円.

I've included a link to ALC where the phrase 10数 is used. Sometimes people just go with 10, other times it's 10-odd. I guess you could translate this as "a loss of profits in the range of several billions of yen". Probably something smoother than that.

Hmm...I think "a billion yen or more" might be closer.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Yasutomo Kanazawa : Sorry Daniel, your interpretation is correct, but your answer is wrong. Several billion yen would be 数十億. Please refer to my answer below.

Yeah, I slightly changed my answer in the note. What did you think of that? "a billion yen or more" I think gets pretty close.
disagree Katsushi Saito : “10数億 = 十数億” is entirely different than “数10億 = 数十億”.

more than one billion

just guess

agree bentkovsky : over 1 billion

disagree Yasutomo Kanazawa : Sorry chrislau, more than one billion is too vague. Your suggestion could mean 10 billion, even 2 billion, which is bigger than 十数億.

Ten several hundred million

Since the above number could be anything like 1.1 or 1.9 billion, maybe this would be clearer to understand.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Daniel Morales : "ten several hundred million" doesn't sound very natural in the English. Maybe it could be "as much as 2 billion"?

Sorry, ur last part doesn't support your argument. Ten several hundred million does NOT equal to 2 billion. 2 billion is 20億。 Several hundred million would be 数千万 and if you multiply ten, the answer would be 十数億。As Mr. Suzuki pointed out below 6 Goo hits.
agree danielmorale (X) : 6 google hits is not a lot, and it sounds terrible. "one billion and several hundred million" is much better, but I still think that "at least 1 billion and as much as 2 billion" is fine since 10数億 is fundamentally a vague number.

one billion and several hundred million

Another possiblity.
5 hits “one billion and several hundred million”
6 hits "Ten several hundred million"
in google.

agree Katsushi Saito : I think it is OK.

one billion and hundreds of millions (of yen or dollars)

Remember to write down a proper currency unit, as required.
I basically agree with Suzuki-san’s suggestion.

Another option is one billion and a few hundred million (yen or dollars).

several billion

no currency kanji included, so by itself does not mean yen, dollars (as part of a E > Jpn translation document), EUR or other.
also, 億 = 10^8; and 10億 = 10^1 x 10^8 = 10^9, i.e., billion; but the current case of "several 10s" of 10^8, means something like 1.3bil, 1.4 bil; but unless the writer is being precise, the spoken meaning is indefinite whether this expression refers to say 3bil, 4, bil, etc.; or say 1.3bil, 1.4 bil. since it is a finance context the writer may indeed mean the later but without further context hard to say which.
