Marc Brunet Mar 24, 2015:
vibration : problem or solution? In a text that refers to grain/powder flow (rheology in other words), mention of 'vibration' tuning would denote the adjustment of the force and frequency by which that flow is impelled, i.e. by means of vibration tables with an appropriate oscillation pattern, perhaps combined with a slight slope, and/or a particular patterned surface for an even lateral/frontal grain distribution.
If so, could the fault assumed in the text imply an insufficient momentum of the flow resulting in a bank-up of powder at some point of the production line? one which the operators try to overcome by increasing the volume and impact of the powder flow onto that bank-up, to the point where the added volume of flowing powder becomes large enough and fast enough to flow over it (a 'bridge' of sort?) without bonding with that bank-up? That is my tentative speculation. How does that fit with what you have?

Thank you for your help. If you're wondering why they are using vibrations and creating bridges, it is because they are trying to recreate a certain type of abnormality and so they are trying many different things.

Thanks for your help again.

We don't know enough It could be as you say, especially if as the OP says the document concerns work on trial and test environment. I think we'd need to see quite a bit more of the text to be able to say for sure.

I also found it very strange that they apply vibration, which is usually used to break bridges, to form bridges. I just assumed that they deliberately form bridges to stop the abnormality affecting the downstream, but that's not a convincing assumption.

Bridge or arch

Basically when powders get fine enough they may no longer flow easily (paint powders perhaps?). Powder can stick to the edges of the container leaving a hole in the middle ("ratholes") and it may also create "arches" or "bridges" consisting of self-supporting clumps of powder that stick together over the hole, so that the powder doesn't flow into the hole. The words bridge and arch should be immediately recognised by somebody working in the field.

It looks to me as if the text is discussing a certain set of circumstances and could be saying that in such a situation "assume that there is an abnormality in the powder flow and use vibration and other methods to break down any bridges". Of course, 起こす usually means to cause or form, but that doesn't seem logical to me in this context. IF (and it's hard to say without seeing the rest of the text) we're talking about powder flow, why would they want to deliberately create arches that impede that flow? Moreover, vibration is usually employed to get rid of arches and bridges. Note that one meaning of 起こす is to plough, turn over, or break up compacted material like soil or maybe in this case powder. You have the text in front of you, so give it some thought.

Anyway, the term itself is either bridge or arch.
Peer comment(s):

agree RieM : I like how you've presented your argument! Anyhow, 起こす could also be to induce (誘起), and my guess was a capillary liquid bridge (interparticle and btw particle and material to be coated) induced to move by or induced by vibration; a powder coating method

form a bridge

It means to form a bridge, which consequently blocks the passage of powder.

「ホッパーの排出口で粉体の粒子同士がアーチ構造を形成して閉塞し、粉体が排出口から排出されない現象を「ブリッジ」と言います。」
