Da un capitolo: "Nel presente lavoro si intende approfondire come viene indagata la “faccia sociale” dell’esperienza oncologica in chi la vive in prima persona, attraverso l’identificazione degli strumenti ....."
l'unica spiegazione che mi è stata fornita è che "faccia sociale" può essere resa come "aspetti sociali": quindi "how the social aspects of the oncological experience may be / are investigated???? by who experiences them...."

in anch'io, come dandamesh, ho la netta senzazione che *in* non significhi *by* - la “faccia sociale” dell’esperienza oncologica viene indagata in chi la vive in prima persona, coloro che la vivono in prima persona costituiscono i soggetti dello studio

poi, per come tradurre indagare, direi che dipende anche da quali sono gli "strumenti" impiegati

l'italiano è contorto ma vuol dire che gli autori mostrano uno studio sull'indagine degli aspetti sociali vissuti da pazienti con il cancro.
Forse sarebbe meglio ristrutturare la frase prima di tradurla

Sorry, I don't agree with Phil: there are lots of articles on "assessing the oncological experience" , even on PubMed.

Indeed I agree with Phil. One would never say "my friend is having an oncological experience". In fact it would be in very bad taste to say that.
