Italian to English Medical Medical (general) cardiology - cycle ergometry

This is in the History section of a report on a patient hospitalized to undergo coronary angiography.

"Alla cicloergometria eseguita dal cardiologo curante, caratterizzata da un *esame insufficiente* si riscontrava comparsa di dispnea ed astenia in assenza di alterazioni elettrocardiografiche inducibili. Si approfondivano quindi le indagini tramite Coro-TC ... ""

I need to understand and know how to translate "esame insufficiente." I find very few (under 10) hits in google for "insufficient" or "poor" or "inadequate" examination in this ergometry context. Does the phrase mean the test was performed poorly, or does it have to do with the patient's test results? This seems like a simple little translation challenge, but I just don't understand it. (Maybe it means the results were inconclusive, and so they had to do more testing?)
