Italian term

tubo pescante

Italian to English Other Medical (general)
How would you translate "tubo pescante" in english?

Context: "Dispositivo costituito da due bottiglioni, in cui il primo funge da raccolta dei secreti provenienti dalla cavità pleurica, e non presenta nessun tubo pescante;"

We are talking about chest drainage.

Thanks

Discussion

Martina Agnes (asker) Sep 18, 2011:
I am Italian-Canadian and I would never judge the work of somebody else as you did in this discussion. Many people pretend to translate and be a translator even if they don't have a degree in this field.
SJLD Sep 17, 2011:
I would always worry about having an adverse effect on patients with my bad translations. Never actually killed anyone when I was practising medicine - don't want to start now.
Joseph Tein Sep 17, 2011:
Trouble :( Agree with that. We can get in over our heads real fast that way. When I've been asked to translate stuff into Spanish (I wouldn't touch Italian) it's taken me something like 5 times as long, with checking and double-checking, and then asking a native to review it for me.
SJLD Sep 17, 2011:
oh gosh! I never translate into anything other than my native language (and in subjects I know). Why ask for trouble?
Joseph Tein Sep 17, 2011:
obviousness Umm... if she's a native Italian speaker, I can see where the exact/correct English word for this gadget would not be self-evident.
SJLD Sep 17, 2011:
isn't it obvious from the picture and text? http://www.chirurgiatoracica.org/per_infermieri/assistenza_a...

There isn't one in the first bottle which collects the pleural fluid, but there is one in the second bottle.

neutral Joseph Tein : Sounds good to me ... I was going to call it a "siphon" tube, but see also http://www.proz.com/kudoz/843617
