Comment: "I chose this answer as it set me on the right track: in my case the person contracted was not responsible for sorting out his own tax affairs and therefore would be considered freelance rather than self-employed. However, it seems that the legal term used is 'independent contractor' (Dizionario Giuridico F de Francis 96). BUT in a title for a contract to provide services(as in my context), it would be simply:'Contract for the rendering of services'. I got there in the end!! Thanks to all. "

You are right. That's commonly meant in Italy for "forma autonoma". Freelance is confusing, besides there are other self-employment forms as "libera professione", and all the other kind of independent jobs. A tobacconist, who is a self-employed is not surely a freelance; a lawyer the same (he is enrolled into a special register, unlike a freelancer). There are also other forms provided by our system: "COCOCO", are those who work half self-employed, they really co-operate as in-house freelancers but are at the same time somehow employees.
