Italian term

persona idonea (PEI)

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial levels of personnel able to carry out electrical work
"La norma CEI 11-27/1 precisa le diverse qualifiche degli addetti alla manutenzione elettrica (PEI – PES – PAV) e a quali requisiti devono soddisfare: la ***persona idonea*** ha istruzione esperienza ed affidabilità tali da permettergli di eseguire in sicurezza ed autonomia lavori elettrici sotto tensione."

I have translations for the PES=Persona esperta=Skilled person, the PAV=Persona avvertita=Informed person, but haven't found anything for PEI, who appears to be 'better' than the Skilled person. I am thinking of going with 'Expert person', but am wondering what other people use for this.

TIA :o)

Thanks Jim but obviously I am too Earnest
James (Jim) Davis Jun 18, 2009:
standards It is so long since I did anything like this, I had forgotten the path to the right answer. Why didn't you use Earnest's suggestion taken from the British version of the European standard that the Italian standard is taken from?<br>http://www.techstreet.com/cgi-bin/detail?product_id=1402477

I took my answer down after I saw Earnest's answer.
Being Earnest Jun 15, 2009:
Warning Hi - sorry for the late feedbacxk but just in case you still have time make sure that you use the terms I have provided. They are from the official Standard "Operation of Electrical Installations"

Persona esperta - skilled person PES
Perswona avvertita - instructed person PAV
Persona comune - ordinary person

PEI is person in charge of an electrical installation
Oliver Lawrence (asker) Jun 13, 2009:
PEI is the top level in a hierarchy of specific levels of competence for working on electrical equipment (PEI then PES then PAV), each level being entitled to do things that the level below couldn't. PEI can work in close proximity to live equipment without supervision, PES must keep a bit further back and PAV needs supervision). It's a standard set of designators, but only PES and PAV seem to come up regularly with English translations...

on reading your note I agree that suitable candidate doesn't fit.

Expert person seems a better translation for 'persona esperta' - maybe you could switch them around and use skilled person for persona idonea and expert person for persona experta (which makes more sense)?

Competent person might be another option for 'persona idonea'.

Just adding this:

The 'person' definitions were in the 16th Edition but are of particular importance in the 17th Edition. They are:

* Skilled Person: 'A person with technical knowledge or sufficient experience to enable him/her to avoid dangers which electricity may create'.
* Instructed Person: 'A person adequately advised or supervised by skilled persons to enable him/her to avoid dangers which electricity may create'.
* Ordinary Person: 'A person who is neither a skilled person nor an instructed person'.

These definitions are crucial as can be understood by Regulation 522.6.7. This requires that, where the installation is not intended to be under the supervision of a skilled or instructed person, and where measures to provide mechanical protection, such as those listed above, have not been applied, then cables must be: run in 'safe zones' (ie. run horizontally or vertically to the outlet point); and protected by a 30mA RCD.

The definitions of a 'skilled person' and an 'instructed person' are given above, but Regulation 411.3.3 associates electrical installations that are under the supervision of skilled or instructed persons with commercial and industrial locations, not domestic premises.1

Finally, and essentially, there is a new definition:

* Competent Person: 'A person who possesses sufficient technical knowledge, relevant practical skills and experience for the electrical work undertaken and is able at all times to prevent danger and where appropriate, injury to him/herself and others'.
