inertizzare

Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng

This term appears in a description of the steps of a pharmaceutical manufacturing process:
"Inertizzare il reattore con azoto seguendo le istruzioni."
This comes before adding a solvent into the reactor. (Part of the process is described as "estrazione con etile acetato".)
For the word "inertizzare" I've found "neutralize" as a possible translation, but since I don't understand any of this process I can't be sure if "neutralize" is appropriate here.
Thank you for your help.

create an inert atmosphere (in the reactor)
N2 is used to create an inert atmosphere for reactions that cannot be carried out in the presence of O2 or H2O. In general, the reactor is first purged with N2 and a steady stream of N2 is kept flowing through the reactor to maintain the inert atmosphere.
I used to be an organic chemist and performed these types of reactions every day...
The preparation and manipulation of certain inorganic compounds requires the use of an inert
atmosphere. Inert often implies that the atmosphere is free from water and oxygen. The reaction
are carried out in a dry nitrogen atmosphere. In other cases nitrogen must also be excluded and then
an argon atmosphere is used.
