Could this be a Tuscan dialect word for some plant I am unfamiliar with? Like "scopiglio"?

BACKGROUND Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius) is native to Europe and was likely introduced as an ornamental. It spreads by seed and inhabits well-drained sites over a wide range of precipitation regimes. Several commercial varieties of Scotch broom are not considered noxious. Check with your local weed control superintendent to determine if your plants are designated noxious.

: Cytisus scoparius, broom (not Scotch broom in UK) is what I was thinking\\That's because they're not UK sites - (it's called a noxious weed in Canada/US) - see e.g.http://www.floralimages.co.uk/pcytisscopa htm www-saps.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/trees/broom.htm
