It isn't a type of reinforcement, it's a feature of the wall construction that the writer thinks has something to do with compensating for the thrust of the roof trusses.

rather than a recess, it might be a return, a projection, a cornice, an architrave in stone, or some such. Without an illustration it's hard to be more precise.
