German term

Rückatmung

German to English Medical Medical (general) Child Bed Mattress
"- Verminderung des Risikofaktors 'CO2-Rückatmung' und der Gefahr einer Überwärmung (Hitzestaus)"

From a list of various features of a child's bed mattress. I don't understand what is meant by "Rückatmung", and can't find a translation for it anywhere. Is it just "inhalation"? TIA for your help.

Сергей Лузан Aug 17, 2006:
Well, I'm afraid not just "inhalation". Have you checked this? http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/translation/German...
Rowan Morrell (asker) Aug 17, 2006:
Ah yes Actually, that's in Dicdata too (which I forgot to check - slaps forehead). But I'm not 100% sure about it.

agree MMUlr : you are right, but a relevant reference text is lacking: https://www.inventiveparent.com/halo_active_airflow_mattress... (this is not about anesthesia) / you have to copy & paste the URL!

Thank you, danke & gracias, MMUlr! :) Opinion of an expert in the field is highly appreciated. Looked into my Stedman meanwhile as well - it confirmed it also as a professional term. Checked your reference - even so. Special thanks for the relevant link:)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This does indeed appear to be the correct medical term, and there were some convincing references and peer grade comments, so that is what I have ended up using. Many thanks, Sergei (I hope I read the Cyrillic script correctly there), and thanks also to everyone else who contributed a peer grade comment or answer of their own - appreciate your help."

here: inhalation

I think, it is - as you stated yourself - the inhalation of carbon dioxyd.

breathing (exhaled carbon dioxide) back in

Maybe this is the way around your problem?

"Reinhaling" might work too; though I don't find that in any of my dictionaries.
As far as "rebreathing" is concerned, it rather looks as if the word is used in connection with treatment , as in breathing in and out of a paper bag, rather than in connection with a subconscious act, as here where a sleeping person (child) is concerned.

neutral Brie Vernier : Nothing wrong with "rebreathing": http://sids-network.org/experts/co2.htm // does this make you feel any better: http://www.creativesports.co.uk/james/purflo/products/purFlo... ? There are plenty more.

Apart from the fact that the one you quote is a US site; so maybe it's another US/UK difference? In any case, it does not altogether invalidate my comment, and as a BENS, I think this one sounds better anyway...

re-inhalation

I don't see why one can't make up a word by inserting the prefix re-, even though that form does not appear in any dictionary
