This is in the mountains. Before the cars came in, they used ladders to go up to the summer houses in the meadows, sometimes just to short cut the winding trails, along which the cows would go up. Not in many places of course, but nevertheless that was pretty well known in the Alps.

By the way there is a village in the French Alps, not too far from Chambéry, called Les Échelles/ Le Scale, for that very reason: in the middle ages, travellers had to go up ladders while their luggage was carried by bearers [a tunnel for coaches was bored in 1808]

Die Landwirtschaft perfektioniert sich im Hochmittelalter in Form der Staffelwirtschaft. Die Alpenflächen werden vertikal in unterschiedliche Höhenstufen eingeteilt, was es den Bauern ermöglicht, die Terrassen im Lauf des Jahres unterschiedlich zu nutzen. Die Erträge der einzelnen Ebenen müssen so miteinander kombiniert werden, dass eine Familie davon leben kann. Die Täler dienen vorzugsweise dem Getreideanbau, während man auf den höheren Lagen das Vieh grasen lässt.
