I am looking for a phrase I can use instead of "set sail" as this refers to a steam boat! Or do you think it is still ok to use this phrase? For a steam boat cruise on a lake.

I think 'set sail' is allowable with a certain amount of poetic licence, but why not keep it simple.

: I don't think a boat/ship needs to have sails in order to "set sail"

Another very common (at least in the USA) term for a ship getting underway -- even if the ship is tied up to the jetty and is not using its anchor.
