These are all terms used in a directive on metallurgical testing of drop forgings. I have managed to translate them into english, but there are probably better terms to use than those I have found. Regards, Iain.

Kenngröße = parameter or characteristic quantity, depending on the context. Butzen = centre punching
Randabkohlung = surface (or skin) decarburisation

Comment: "Thanks to both repliers. You have confirmed my translations, except for the Centre Punching, which does not fit well with the rest of that particular sentence. The reference is to a sawn or sheared Butzen, so I have left it as Bull's Eye.

1. Cornelsen's Terchnicheswörerbuch Machinenbau/Anlagentechnik/Umwelt lists 'boss' or 'patch' for 'Butzen'.
2. Beizscheibe - Wolfgang has the right idea. At http://www.dirostahl.de/en_diroabk.txt, there is 'Beizssheibe (Makrogefüge)' 'Makrogefüge' = macrostructure, thus the crystaline structure of the metal. A Beizscheibe must be a slice of the casting that is first etched and then inspected to verify the crystaline structure of the metal. After all that, though, I don't know what the proper English equivalent is.
